Define the local-copy boundary
A sync or permission error may be a provider authorization issue, a client-state problem, a filename or path limitation, a version conflict or a local protection boundary. Preserve evidence and test each layer separately.
An authorized employee downloads one named file for a time-limited Windows task, records its source and owner, protects only the approved retained copy and keeps Microsoft 365 permissions authoritative for collaboration.
Run the diagnostic sequence
- 01
Record the exact error, time, account, library and path.
- 02
Confirm provider access in the browser before changing local protection.
- 03
Pause repeated retries and preserve conflicting copies.
- 04
Test sync with a fictional file in an approved location.
- 05
Escalate with logs that exclude secrets and unnecessary content.
Preserve decision evidence
Record error, account class, source URL, device, client state, local protection state, fictional-file test, actions, result and escalation owner.
Stop when
- Troubleshooting requires sharing a password or confidential file.
- Protection is disabled broadly without a rollback plan.
- The only conflicting copy is being overwritten.
Keep controls separate
Local encryption does not administer Teams or SharePoint permissions, restore Microsoft 365 versions, guarantee backup, recover unknown passwords or replace enterprise identity management.
Common questions
Does revoking a SharePoint link erase a download?
No. Provider permission changes do not automatically remove a previously downloaded local copy.
Does password reset guarantee access to an old locker?
Do not assume so. Test and document product-specific recovery using non-sensitive files.
